Information Guide: The only effective means of transport on Fraser Island is by four Wheel drive vehicles. There are a number of vehicle ferries departing and returning to the island at regular intervals (see our barge timetable below). There are a number of companies in Hervey Bay, Fraser Island, Rainbow Beach, Noosa and Brisbane that hire for wheel drive vehicles (listed below). There are air charter companies in Hervey Bay that fly to Fraser Island on a daily basis and land on the beach at Eurong Beach and Happy Valley. |

A vehicle entry permit and a camping permit are required if you are taking a 4wd onto the island and camping. Permits are available from QNPWS at Rainbow Beach, Maryborough, Brisbane, and Hervey Bay. As Fraser Island is all sand, take care when driving on the Island. Only travel along the beach within 2 hours of low tide and watch for washouts caused by the numerous freshwater streams flowing to the beach. If in doubt walk through the area first. Always avoid the two hours either side of high tide. It is not recommended that you drive along the beach at night. Please observe normal road rules and speed limits. When driving on the beach keep a constant lookout for pedestrians and watch for aircraft taking off and landing on the beach.
Camping is allowed anywhere on the beach except near streams and where it is signposted otherwise. Camping inland is only allowed at designated areas as shown the maps (also available from the link below). Take extreme care when swimming on the eastern beach. It is usually very rough water and does contain severe rips. There are also a number of guided tours to Fraser Island. One, two or three day tours leave Hervey Bay, Rainbow Beach, Noosa, Sunshine Coast, or Brisbane. Whether it is adventure or comfort you are after there is a tour to suit your taste. Tours and accommodation guide can be found at: See Fraser Island. General Info: Fraser Island is part of the Great Sandy Region, the section of coastline stretching from the north shore of the Noosa River below Lake Cooroibah and Cooloola National Park, to Sandy Cape at the northern tip of Fraser. Just a taste of this World Heritage listed paradise will leave you feeling charmed and captivated. Spanning 124 kilometres and covering an area of 163,000 hectares, Fraser Island has developed over 800,000 years. It is a unique natural environment - the largest sand island in the world and the only place on the planet where rainforest grows on sand, Rich Aboriginal heritage and a colourful European history and integral to Fraser. This combination makes Fraser Island one of the most rare and mysterious features of Queensland's coastline. Fraser Island's abundant pristine fresh water lakes and crystal clear creeks are great spots to view unique flora and fauna and also provide a welcome oasis on hot summer days. Scenic 4wd circuits and walking tracks take in some of the largest of the lakes including McKenzie, Birrabeen, Benaroon, Boomanjin and the spectacular Lake Wabby. An exceptional range of flora is found on the Island. Cool and peaceful rainforests of towering satinay and brush box trees, some over 1,000 years old, contrast with swampy wetlands, heathlands full of wild flowers and coastal stands of Pandanus palms. You can find below a Barge time table and links to 4wd hire and a verity of Fraser Island Accommodation and Fraser Island Tours. Enjoy! |
